Each year at our Association conference we recognize members of our HBCU Performance community who have been innovators, founders, outstanding performers and those leaving a lasting impact on the culture.

We also recognize founding members of our performance teams who we bestow with Honorary/Emeritus membership.
Dr. Shelton also oversees talent acquisition, organizational development, compensation, and HR information systems for the City of Greensboro. She earned Senior Professional in Human Resources and Certified she has earned degrees from NC A&T State University and NC State University. She is also a member of Greensboro’s Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., alumnae chapter and just recently completed a doctorate in strategic leadership from Liberty University.

TIFFANY B. SHELTON

Dr. Tiffany B. Shelton has served as Director of Golden Delight Auxiliary at North Carolina A&T University for 25 years. She is a former member of Golden Delight. During her tenure as Director, she’s guided the team through the transition of styles from when she performed as a member of the troupe, to the style that fans and supporters know and love today.
She’s been fortunate to lead her team through countless halftime shows, parade performances and other events which include the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2012, The Rose Bowl Parade in 2023, numerous Honda Battle of the Bands and National Battle of the Bands performances, and many others. She has assembled a team of leaders that has created an unmistakable style for the team that has young performers coming from across the country to audition.
Dr. Sanford was Director of Bands and Department Chair at Norfolk State (VA) where he and Paul I. Adams went on to found the HBCU National Band Director’s Consortium. They also founded the Battle Fest Band competition. After leaving Norfolk State, he transitioned to Jackson State (MS) University where he started as a band recruiter and ultimately was promoted to Director of Bands. Retiring in 2017, O'Neill has stayed active as a composer, arranger and clinician, and continues to grow and support the National Band and Orchestra Directors' Consortium into the future.

DR. O'NIELL SANFORD

A graduate of Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA, O'Neill Sanford taught at Sevier High School before heading to a position at Mississippi Valley State College. There, he taught trombone and arranged for marching band. Later, he was promoted to Director of Bands. Shortly after moving to a position with Virginia State College, a friend encouraged him to apply at Minnesota, and he went on to earn the position of marching band director.
He made history at Minnesota in 1976 as the first Black Big Ten Band Director. He was Associate Director of Bands and Marching Band Director at the University of Minnesota from 1976 to 1985. During his time there he also conducted the second concert band and jazz ensemble. A talented writer, O'Neill arranged most of the music the Marching Band performed, challenging the students with exciting charts of all styles. He took the Minnesota Marching Band on international trips to Mexico City; Winnipeg; Malaga, Spain; and London. Offered the opportunity to lead the entire band department at the University of Pittsburgh, Sanford left Minnesota in 1985.
He is the co-founder of Historically Black College/Universities National Bank Directors Consortium and a member of the Minority National Band Directors Association and College Band Directors. He continues to attend major band conferences, and works diligently to continue the legacy of the HBCU National Band and Orchestra Directors’ Consortium.

MR. PAUL I. ADAMS

Paul I. Adams graduated from Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA and received a Master of Arts in music education from Louisiana State University in 1973. In 1966 Mr. Adams became Assistant Director of Bands and Chief Arranger at Southern University. In 1976 he moved on to become Director of Bands at Howard University. In 1986 Mr. Adams became Assistant Director of Bands at Jackson State University, where he served for 11 years. In 2000, Mr. Adams became Asst. Professor and Director of Bands at Norfolk State University, he worked with over 260 members and was the primary arranger. He remained at Norfolk State until his retirement in 2017.

BRIAN WILLIAMS

Brian L. Williams of Tampa, FL is a well-known dancer, choreographer, instructor and coach of young dancers. He's known for his role as Director of the iconic Bubblin' Brown Sugar Dance Line at Morris Brown College who was featured in the ground-breaking movie Drumline. For many years he was the Director of the Champagne Dancers of South Carolina State University. His accomplishments are many:

In addition to her passion for the HBCU Performance genre, she has also worked in the technology field at various companies.

Keelia Brown

Keelia Brown of Charlotte, NC, is the founder of HBCU Dance Corp, a non-profit organization that supports the successful matriculation of young ladies who participate in the art and sport of dance at HBCU schools through scholarships, dance training, sponsorships, annual awards and online tools. The HBCU Dance Corporation was dedicated to providing relevant dance information and tools for current and aspiring HBCU band dance teams - including performance videos & photos, audition information, upcoming events, forums and more.
A graduate with a Bachelors and Masters in Mathematics from Clark Atlanta University, Keelia was a member of the Mahogany N Motion Dance Team and the Clark Atlanta Basketball Dance Team.
Mr. Morris has performed with the Drum Corp International (DCI) guards for the Madison Scouts and Southwind of Alabama.

Eddie Morris

Mr. Eddie Morris is well known in the Color Guard and Flag Line circles. He has been coaching a total of 35 amazing years and has been coaching at South Carolina StateUniversity since the closure of Morris Brown College.
She teaches fitness classes and still dances as a member of the Houston Rockets Space City Senior Dance Team.

Gretchen Jean

Gretchen Jean is currently the coach of the Texas Southern Sensations Dance Team. Prior to that she coached the Motion of the Ocean Dance Line that performed with the Ocean of Soul Marching Band. She is also a former Houston Rockets Dancer.
